While it may be tempting to add a visitor counter, flashy background, an exciting new font or cluster of quirky animated gifs, loading up your blog with all of the free accessories that you can find, isn't necessarily a good idea. Get the most out of free blog tools and be selective.

It's a good idea to learn about all of the different kinds of free tools available, you can then make an informed decision about which ones to use. Remember, just because you can have something, doesn't mean that you need it. Practice restraint, only choosing the options that will be useful. E.g., you can find out how many visitors are reading your blog by checking your traffic statistics, either on your blog stats page, webhosting or google analytics. Adding a visitor counter is unnecessary clutter. Or, if your blog is text-based, a flashy background is more of a distraction than a benefit.
